Experience

My history of informal tutoring and mentoring goes back to sixth grade when my teacher assigned me to a first grader as a reading and mentoring partner. From there, I spent years working with classmates, younger cousins, and family friends in a variety of tutoring capacities. In college, I became a Teacher’s Assistant for a Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) class, which evolved into tutoring the students on my own time. Later, during the recession, my office went to four-day work weeks, leaving me with a free day to volunteer at my local elementary school. My tasks involved one-on-one assessments to make sure the students were keeping up with the curriculum, and remediation for those who were struggling. My tutoring flame was reignited after joining the Marine Corps Reserves where I took on the responsibility of making sure my Marines passed their formal training classes and were successful in practice. There are several qualities that make me an effective mentor and tutor. First, I personally love learning about the world around me, and I am extremely enthusiastic about helping others find joy in learning. Second, I show great care and empathy for the student, their background, their goals, and their motivations. Lastly, I have the patience and creativity to figure out what best helps the student succeed. Sometimes, it is as simple as having somebody different explain a topic, or demonstrate real-world uses for the topic, or even just having an encouraging friend help them through their obstacles.

Hobbies

My extracurricular background includes sports, music, and art. In school I played baseball, football, and lacrosse. After college I volunteered as an assistant coach for a boys youth lacrosse league, coaching a U-14 and a U-10 team. I also grew up playing percussion in bands at school, the community, and my church. Lastly, being married to another architectural designer, a lot of our time is spent renovating our house, going to art museums and galleries, and exploring towns for their local art, architecture, and culture.
